Sarner Schlucht - ruins and castles

The gorge of the Sarner Valley, north of Bolzano. Higher up you can see the remnants of an old castle.

Renon/Ritten - Johanniskofel

Going downward from Wangen on path 4: in the picture below you see the Sarner Valley (Sarntal) and Bolzano/Bozen in the distance.

Here you see the gorge (Sarner Schlucht).

St. John's - the little church is on top of the rock (Johanniskofel); the rock is about 180 m high.

Renon/Ritten

Renon/Ritten is an extended ridge near Bolzano/Bozen with at least five villages. Here we are in Wangen/Vanga (the church above, a barn below).

Rural dwellings near Oberinn/Auna di Sopra

Romeno (Val di Non)

On the outskirts of Romeno in Val di Non there is a very old chapel (origins presumably nearly 1500 years ago), dedicated to the saints Thomas and Bartholomew. It's one of the oldest christian temples in this region integrally preserved (at least the basic structure). Frescos date at a later period (about 1200-1250 CE). A very special place indeed.

Trekking toward Mt. M'Goun. Here you see Agouti (below: the remnants of the old casbah). Here ended the road - we had to proceed with our own forces and with the help of mules.
